Ts2340 Ultrium Tape Drive by Ibm
TS2340 Tape Drive from IBM combines the reliability, robustness and performance of the IBM tape. The IBM ultrium-4 model has 120 MB/second native data transfer speed while the LTO-3 offers 80 MB/second native speed.
IBM ultrium-4’s native capacity has been doubled (800GB) in comparison to that of the LTO ultrium 3. Ultrium 4 has the encryption technology and it supports “application managed encryption” on tape drives of LTO-4 SAS. It has option of rack mount (19 inch) that can accommodate single IBM TS2340 drive. The IBM drive (3580 machine type) offers high performance and capacity for “mid range open systems”. LTO 4 Tape drive of IBM can write and read data cartridges of LTO-3 and has the ability to read the cartridges of ultrium-2.
The new models from IBM can attach to IBM System i, IBM System p, MS Windows, UNIX, Sun Solaris, PC servers and IBM system x. TS2340 drive is external rack mountable or stand alone unit and entry point for IBM LTO tape family products. The users of DLT, SDLT, 8mm, 4mm or ¼ inch tape drives have migration path provided by the IBM TS2340 drive.
Enhancements have been made in the IBM ultrium-4 to improve its performance and efficiency. So, the tape capacity has been increased to 800GB and transfer speed up to 120MB/second. Its native data is also improved over LTO-3. It has larger internal buffer of 256MB and has the encryption technology. IBM LTO4 has cartridge memory of 8KB with LTO-4 media. The integrated electronics use the copper technology engineered by IBM. In order to attach IBM TS2340 drive to IBM System p, IBM System i, PC servers, Sun Solaris, UNIX, HP-UX and IBM System x requires appropriate host software’s levels.
TS2340 drive contains LTO-4 drive and has the ability and technology to fulfill heavy requirements of backup tape data storage. Drive models of TS2340 incorporate technology of IBM ultrium-4. In TS2340 drive model, data tracks that can be written at a time are 16. The IBM ultrium LTO-4 drive writes and reads LTO-3 cartridges at LTO-3’s rates & capacity. TS2340 LTO4 SAS drive supports data encryption on base tape drive with LTO4 media that meets the specifications of LTO consortium & application managed encryption.
IBM 3589 tape cartridges have the WORM technology and have the features that support the data retention & archiving applications along with the applications that require audit trial. These data cartridges work with LTO4 drive for preventing the deletion or alteration of the user data. IBM 3589 models can specify color coding & serial of starting volume. They are packed in bulk or jewel cases (individual). Every cartridge of IBM 3589 has cartridge memory (built-in) that improves media reliability and functionality by storing the information about media performance and access history to be used by the tape drive every time data tape is accessed. IBM ultrium4 drive has internal (256MB) data buffer while the ultrium3 drive has internal data buffer of 128MB.
The IBM engineered integrated electronics reduce tape drive’s components, power requirements, and the chip temperature is also lowered. All of these features improve the tape drive’s reliability. IBM ultrium-4 drive has 16 channel dual stage head actuator. Head actuator gives precision alignment of head that supports higher density of track and hence enhances the data integrity.
